Taking my grandma to the bus stop…

Today was the day most kids in the Michigan Public School systems returned to classes. It’s the day that most are dreading throughout the entire summer. The first day back to school.

A day filled with excitement of what can be done differently this year (even if it really doesn’t ever happen) and a day filled with dread (because the bus comes REALLY early… and sleeping in was the norm for the previous 2-3 months.)

But the kids weren’t the only ones to get on a bus today.

My grandma (and her friend) did too. And I was the one who brought them too the bus stop.

You really need to picture the whole story though.

A while back my grandma was looking for someone to take her take  her to a local church where a “Mystery Bus Tour” was starting out – at 6am. Yes, I was the granddaughter that volunteered for this fine venture. I get up early anyway for work… what’s another 1/2 hour right?

Then on Sunday, grandma informs me that I need to be there by 5:45 (instead of 5:55). No biggie.

Until this morning.

I didn’t sleep well – not to mention set 2 different alarms – because I didn’t want to be late… and thereby being the cause of her missing this big adventure. After all, I’m all about the big adventures here people! :)

So I pick up the grandma and her friend. We drive to the church.

And we find an almost empty parking lot.

No Bus. And one other “early bird” car {sheilded by darkness.}

More car joined us in the next 15 minutes (<— See how much longer I could have slept!) while waiting for the bus to arrive.

Then as we saw the bus pull into the parking lot, it was quite a sight watching all of the little old ladies decend upon that bus.

Just like the kids do for school. With excitement and a little bit of fear.

And as I was leaving the parking lot, it began to rain… and I tweeted {not while driving}:

Now it’s raining. I’m wondering if grandma has her rain bonnet. #YouHaveToLetThemGrowUp

I can’t wait to hear about this big 4 day mystery adventure.

Maybe I’ll go on one of these someday.

Of course, I may have to dye my hair gray to get on that bus.

The most memorable camping trip…

This week I am playing along with Mama Kat’s writers workshop at Mama’s Losin It – mostly because one of the prompts had to do with camping… and I just got back from a trip this weekend. {A good trip too!! Went kayaking for the first time – so fun.}

Mama's Losin' It

Writing prompt: Describe a memorable camping trip.

My family went camping every summer when I was growing up. It was a way of life, what we did. And as long as it wasn’t raining when we had to be cooped up inside a trailer attempting to occupy ourselves with the “indoor games” it was kinda fun. And for many of these camping trips my grandparents {and sometimes my great-grandfather} were with us in their own trailer.

The one memorable camping trip happened {I believe} just before I entered high school. It was the last “big” camping trip before my grandfather’s car accident.

It was one of the hottest – if not *the* hottest – summer on record for the upper mid-west. We drove east through the state of Michigan into Canada on our way ultimately to eastern edges of Canada and the US. On that very first day… mere hours into the trip… something happened to our van. I don’t recall exactly what {as I am not mechanically inclined} but I remember my mom pointing out that it was 104 degrees in the shade by the tree we were gathered under.

Somehow {a miracle in my book} the van got fixed and we carried on with our journey eastward. We ventured to Niagara Falls, Cooperstown and back into Canada.

We visited Prince Edward Island. And if you were anything like me, you probably would get very excited about going to visit the home of “Anne of Green Gables”. I loved her. Well, actually, I loved Gilbert. But Anne, Diana, Marilla and Matthew followed *very* closely behind. So in the opportunity to visit all of this with my mom and grandma {while the boys went deep sea fishing}, I was giddy. I might not have shown it, but truly in my heart that’s what I felt. :)

We saw so many things that I remembered from reading… and the sights of travelling the roads and seeing the house were amazing. I hope that someday I can share that same experience with my own daughter.

Anywhoo… after our time on the wonderful PEI, we started on our way home. And because it was July – and we had already visited the Cooperstown Baseball Hall of Fame with/for my brothers – we of course had to listen to the All Star Game on the radio. Yeah. I may have forgotten to mention that the day of the game we were in the Province of Quebec. And in case you don’t know… they speak primarily French there.

Not so good for us English speaking Americans.

We gathered around the radio listening closely for names we recognized and maybe some excitement that we could gather into a great play or home run. I recall that this did not last for very long… but maybe my memory doesn’t serve me well. After all, I could have been re-reading “Anne of Green Gables” at that point. :)

There were other things that happened on this trip – like the night that we had some seriously strong storms come through (can’t say that I love thunderstorms while I’m camping) or the time that my dad hit a picnic table with the back of the trailer (I don’t remember what happened to the table, but the camper had a dent in the bumper from that day on.)

I think the reason that this trip was so memorable is because there was so much thought put into it. So much planning… but not so much that we were held tightly to an itinerary. There was something for everyone to see and do… and many things that happened that we just will never forget.

There were numerous additional memorable camping trips up north at either Silver Lake or Mackinaw Island… but I’ll leave those for another time.

Have you ever gone camping? What is your favorite memory?

I am a determined polka dot…

I can’t believe the weekend is done and I’m back to my normal daily routine. I can’t complain though, with a spa day on Thursday with the girls and a perfect wedding and reception on Friday. I’ll have pictures to show you all tomorrow! :) I hope you all enjoyed the wedding week posts — I am so thankful for Jennifer, Liz, Luschka, Wendy, Victoria and Jeannette for sharing with us!

What I wanted to share about was something that my brother said to (or about) me on Thursday evening at the rehearsal dinner.

I should first back up to say that he and I have had a number of feuds through the years and still the ease of bickering with each other comes quicker than being patient in most instances. But things are much better than when we were younger… that’s for sure. And even now, he calls for advice on certain things that I may or may not be an expert at. We really do get along now.

On Thursday evening, we were all asked to share something about the soon-to-be-wedded-couple. I felt like an idiot because I didn’t prepare anything – and really didn’t want to go up there… and hope that everything I said was forgotten already. I should have written a letter to him — which I might do yet for his birthday and post it here. (He doesn’t read my blog… so I’ll have to e-mail it to him too. LOL)

After everyone had shared, the bride and groom spoke of their gratefulness to each of their parents… and then individually to each member of the bridal party. I wish I had somehow been able to video all of these because they really put a lot of thought and caring into their gifts and words that they shared.

And what I learned that night from my brother is that I’m a polka dot. (While this is not word for word what he said, you’ll get the idea.)

Polka dots are quite random things. Sometimes they are in a nice neat row and all in the same color… but they also come in patterns full of randomness and crazy colors all mixed in with each other. You used to be predictable Julie… everyone knew what to expect and when. And then somewhere over the past few years in your weight loss journey something changed. Somehow you changed.

And now (as I unwrapped a bottle of wine called “Polka Dot”) you are just like a polka dot. We never know what to expect with what is going to happen next. Where you are going next. And that’s a good thing.

I am just like a polka dot. He nailed it when he said that. There are days that even I don’t know what’s going to happen next in my own life. There are times that I surprise myself with the things that I can do – and the things that I can accomplish.

Last year I asked many family members and friends to describe me in a word or two… or even a sentence. I felt completely blessed by their responses — and still have yet to figure out why I never used the material before this in a blog post. The number one thing that came up in more than 1/3 of the responses was that they see me – and know me to be – a very determined individual. I can do anything I set my heart into doing. You may not know what is going to be accomplished next, but it will be completed.

So there you have it.

I am a determined polka dot.

Maybe I should change my “About Me” page to reflect some of this new found information. :)

How would others describe you?
